The company discovered the diamond at its KAO mine in the African country on June 12, according to brokerage firm Bonas-Couzyn, which will facilitate the sale. The stone — named the Rose of KAO — will appear in Antwerp for viewings from September 17 to 28, and bidding in an online tender will close October 1. The auction is part of the fourth sale of KAO goods this year. Namakwa owns and operates the KAO mine through its subsidiary, Storm Mountain Diamonds. The organization's New York center received 1,102 small diamonds weighing a combined 9.67 carats for its melee-analysis service. Initial screening referred 1,093 of them for further testing, while the GIA could not assess the other nine because they did not meet the service's criteria for examining stones. Spectroscopic tests confirmed 1,092 of the 1,093 diamonds to be synthetics created using the High Pressure-High Temperature ( HPHT ) technique. The American Gem Trade Association 's annual gem cutting and jewelry design contest, the Spectrum Awards, took place in New York over the weekend. On Tuesday, editors were invited to the Ramscale Studio to view all the designs, including those crowned as winners. Among them: this platinum ring set with an unbelievable 20.26-carat cushion-cut unheated yellow sapphire accented with 3.6 carats of diamonds.
